Most venue owners we talk to think they only have two options: buy a vending machine outright, or pay a weekly hire fee. There's a third route that almost always beats both, free hosting on a revenue-share deal. Here's how the models actually stack up.
Option 1: Buying a vending machine
Upfront cost in Australia runs $4,000–$12,000 for a single capsule or snack machine, plus a cashless reader (typically Nayax or Mr Sandman, ~$600), freight, and a power-tested install. Then it's on you: stock sourcing, restocking trips, jam-clearing, refunds, telemetry, software, and the slow march of obsolescence.
- Capital outlay: $5k–$13k per machine, before stock.
- Operating time: ~2 hours per week per machine, conservatively.
- Risk: theft, mechanical failure, dead stock, payment provider lock-in.
- Upside: you keep 100% of margin, when everything goes right.
Option 2: Hiring or leasing a machine
Hire deals usually look like $80–$200 per week for the hardware, sometimes with a 12–36 month lock-in. Stock and servicing may or may not be included; read the fine print carefully. You still carry the operational load, but you've turned capex into opex.
- Weekly fee: $80–$200 typical, before stock.
- Minimum term: often 12+ months with break fees.
- Servicing: sometimes excluded, confirm before signing.
- Upside: no big upfront cheque.
Option 3: Free hosting with revenue share
This is what we do at Vend Brands. You give us a power point and a small footprint. We supply the machine, install it, stock it, service it, handle every refund, and split the revenue with you. There is no fee, no lock-in deposit, and no operational overhead on your team.
Which model wins?
If you already operate vending and your team has the time, buying can win on margin per machine. For everyone else, gyms, laundromats, arcades, hotels, waiting rooms, community centres, hosting almost always nets more profit per square metre because your team spends zero hours on it.
If you're weighing this up for a venue in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane or anywhere in regional NSW, get in touch, we'll run the numbers on your specific foot traffic before you commit to anything.
